Reconstruction of Seattle's historic landmark Pioneer Square Pergola, which
was damaged by a truck in January 2001. While the Pergola remains aesthetically
the same, the welded cast iron hides a new continuous inner skeleton of structural
steel, meeting current building codes and seismic regulations.
The community welcomed the Pergola back at a grand re-opening event in
August 2002, and in March 2003 the Pioneer Square Pergola project received
the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer’s Award for Outstanding
Achievement under the Valerie Sivinski Award for Historic Rehabilitation category.
